Ruben P. Alvarez, Ed.D., directs the Language, Bilingualism, and Biliteracy Program at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Dr. Alvarez completed his doctorate in human development and psychology at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education focusing on bilingual development and neuroscience. Prior to joining the NICHD, Dr. Alvarez held a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health, and later became an assistant professor at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research and the University of Tulsa. The program Dr. Alvarez directs is focused on supporting research in normative language development from infancy through early adulthood, bilingualism and/or second-language acquisition, and reading in children learning English in addition to a language spoken at home.
