Dr. Michelle M. Timmerman is the Acting Director of the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts, Director of the AREA (R15) Program, and Coordinator of the NIH Conference Grant Program in the Office of Extramural Research in NIH’s Office of the Director. As Acting Guide Director, she ensures that all Funding Opportunity Announcements and Notices comply with NIH, DHHS, and OMB policies and regulations. She also provides technical guidance on policy issues related to grant applications and extramural programs. Dr Timmerman also serves as the Director of the AREA (R15) Program, which supports student-driven research at small colleges and universities.
Before joining OER, Dr. Timmerman served for 7 years as a Scientific Review Officer at NIAID. At NIAID, she managed the review of career development awards (Ks) and training grants (T32s) by the MID standing committee, in addition to managing the review of research grants, contracts, and complex mechanisms in Special Emphasis Panels. Prior to that, she was a regulatory reviewer of sterile drug manufacturing at the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Timmerman earned her BS in biology summa cum laude from Denison University, a small liberal arts college in central Ohio, and her PhD in microbiology from University of Wisconsin-Madison and conducted postdoctoral research in bacterial pathogenesis at University of Iowa.
